URBAN CURRENTS: Chicago Stories
a photomedia tapestry

The main focal point upon entry to the newly renovated lobby of Swissotel Chicago is this commissioned photomedia bas-relief. It is 24 feet by 26 feet and reflects a traveler's perspective of Chicago. "This piece portrays a purposeful focus, leisurely focus and subliminal focus trying to bring all those together to give them equilibrium in the same way I'm trying to bring a balance of media, form and technique. As a work of public art this piece will hopefully raise similar questions for Chicago natives, tourists and travelers alike and will help us to discover our need for sharing our stories and creating a common and musical language. My work attempts to erase boundaries. It's photography, painting and sculpture. It's a scrapbook on a grand scale for the public to read". -Jan Gilbert

C.F. Bean, an international dredging corporation, commissioned this 5' x 7' x 3" mixed photomedia artwork for its main office reception areas. Gilbert utilized corporate images in her bookwork/relief.
