Her two and three dimensional works combining painting, printmaking and photography, have been shown widely in galleries, museums and cultural centers across the United States and abroad. The Carroll Gallery of Newcomb Art Department in New Orleans and the Contemporary Artists Center, North Adams, Massachusetts, are recent venues in which one person installations of her artworks were held. Gilbert's works are often commemorative and deal with such subjects as an homage to her deceased major league ballplayer father, an AIDS memorial in honor of her best friend, and bookworks remembering the Vietnam War.
Gilbert has been awarded Individual Artist's Fellowships from the Southern Arts Federation/National Endowment for the Arts (1990) and the Louisiana Division of the Arts (l995, minigrants 1997-2001). Her projects have received support from the NEA/Rockefeller Initiative for Interdisciplinary Artists (1995, 1988), Art Matters, Inc. (1990, 1992), The Warhol Foundation, and the National Association of Artist's Organizations and the Pew Charitable Trusts, among others. She has participated in several artistic/cultural exchanges and presented lectures and workshops at many venues here and abroad.
A founding member of the New Orleans-based artist/writer collaborative The VESTIGES Project, Gilbert has served as curator and producer of a wide variety of traveling interdisciplinary public art projects which include video, performance, site interactions and artists' books. Present and upcoming collaborative projects include: an exchange with Macedonian artists under the auspices of the (SPACE)2, funded by the Trust for Mutual Understanding, culminating in site specific public artworks; and a series of workshops, lectures and public artworks which will appear in downtown Tacoma, Washington, during Summer 2004.
Her artworks have been commissioned by many institutions, individuals and corporations, including the Massachusetts Central Artery Project, Swissotel Chicago, Shell Offshore, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans. Gilbert has taught art at various colleges and universities in New Orleans, and she is presently an artist/teacher with the graduate program of the Union Institute and University, Vermont College.
